Coconut oil and flower hair oil treatment:

(This will need to be prepared the night before you plan to use it)

You will need:

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup fresh flower petals
  • 2 tablespoons rose water

Directions:

  1. Bring the 1/2 cup of coconut oil to a boil in a small pan
  2. Add the rose water
  3. Add the fresh flower petals of your choice
  4. Let return to a boil for three minutes
  5. Let the flowers steep in the oil overnight
  6. In the morning, strain the oil through a coffee filter or cheesecloth into an airtight container
  7. When ready to oil your hair, rub a few tablespoons in your hair and wrap tight in a towel
  8. Let sit for about 20 minutes, then shampoo and rinse as normal

Pineapple Foot Rub

This one is easy as pie:

  • Take 1 cup of fresh pineapple and puree in a food processor
  • Take the pineapple mixture and spread and rub all over feet including your heels and around your nails (you may feel a tingle)
  • After 10 minutes rinse off with warm water and pat dry

Make your own lotion from coconut oil!

If you’ve read my post on coconut oil then you already know all of the benefits it brings…but making your own lotion from it is one of my favorites!  It lasts longer than store bought lotions and is really good for your skin!  You don’t need much to make the lotion, you probably have some of these things in your kitchen already.

You will need:

  • 1/2 cup  olive oil (or almond oil)
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup beeswax
  •  1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil

You can also add essential oils if you would like!

All you have to do is:

  • mix the ingredients into a glass jar (any kind will do as long as it’s big enough to contain the ingredients)
  • heat a couple inches of water in a sauce pan (enough to submerge the bottom bit of the jar)
  • place the jar in the hot water and watch the ingredients melt, shaking around occasionally
  • pour into small jar or container of your choice and put on lid and you’re done!

Summer Saviors: things around the house that will save you (and your pocket)

coco oliveoil rawhoney bakingso

There are a few key items that I like to keep around my house, and that I suggest you do as well.  These include: coconut oil, olive oil, baking soda, and honey (raw). There are so many uses for these items, and it helps to have them handy when treating certain ailments…rather than having to run to the store to buy special or expensive products for each situation.  Here’s some examples that could come in handy this Summer:

  • coconut oil has hundreds of uses… and can come in handy to soothe sunburn and also to as a moisturizer for dry skin. For more uses check out my post under PRODUCTS TO LOVE: Coconut Oil
  • baking soda, when mixed into a paste with a mashed up banana (and scrapings of the peel), and about a fourth of a cup of whole grain oats, makes an awesome remedy for super itchy bug bites! Leave it on for 8-10 minutes and rinse off. Major relief and no worries of any harmful chemicals on the skin!
  • raw honey prevents infections around wounds, and can be used as a sunburn treatment when mixed with a mashed up cucumber and a few teaspoons of aloe…just use enough honey to keep the mixture from running off the skin.
  • olive oil also has many uses, and is great for its moisturizing properties.  It works amazingly as a hot oil treatment for frizzy hair! Just heat the oil to slightly warm in a heat safe container and dip your hair in it, then wrap up in a shower cap and warm towel and let sit for 20-30 minutes. Then rinse with warm water and shampoo (probably twice to make sure you get all out).  And viola! Super soft and silky tresses!

Just some uses that are inexpensive and can help get you through the Summer!  I’d love to hear about how you use them…
