Ooh La La (Lacquers!)

13 Jul

Next Friday I have my first show as a vendor…I am selling some of my hand made nail lacquer that I make and sell online.  (The name of the line is LaLa Lacquers and is found on http://etsy.com/shop/LaLaLacquers  ) . I managed to get in the “lab” this week and produce a good amount of polishes to bring along.  Here are some (not so great) photos of a few of the color samples, all of which will be made available for sale on Etsy:

NEW! Urban Decay B6 Vitamin-Infused Complexion Prep Spray…out tommorow!

24 Jun

Just when our high-tech makeup setting  sprays were getting a little lonely on the shelf, our product development team  had the brilliant idea to create an antioxidant-rich prep spray. In an exclusive  partnership with Skindinavia, UD launches B6 Vitamin-Infused Complexion Prep  Spray. This scientifically advanced formula contains the first stabilized form  of vitamin B6, which absorbs oil, minimizes pores and reduces redness. Spritz it  on any time of day to hydrate, prep and soften your skin with vitamins and  antioxidants. Use it in the morning to prep and wake up your skin, during the  day to refresh your skin (without messing up your makeup), or at night before  your treatment. Versatile enough for people of all ages and skin types, men  included, this energizing formula is great for your skin and it feels amazing.  The more you use it, the better the results.”-UD

Super exciting! I will be purchasing and reviewing…. 🙂

DIY: coconut and flower hair oil treatment and a pineapple foot rub

16 Jun

Coconut oil and flower hair oil treatment:

(This will need to be prepared the night before you plan to use it)

You will need:

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup fresh flower petals
  • 2 tablespoons rose water

Directions:

  1. Bring the 1/2 cup of coconut oil to a boil in a small pan
  2. Add the rose water
  3. Add the fresh flower petals of your choice
  4. Let return to a boil for three minutes
  5. Let the flowers steep in the oil overnight
  6. In the morning, strain the oil through a coffee filter or cheesecloth into an airtight container
  7. When ready to oil your hair, rub a few tablespoons in your hair and wrap tight in a towel
  8. Let sit for about 20 minutes, then shampoo and rinse as normal

Pineapple Foot Rub

This one is easy as pie:

  • Take 1 cup of fresh pineapple and puree in a food processor
  • Take the pineapple mixture and spread and rub all over feet including your heels and around your nails (you may feel a tingle)
  • After 10 minutes rinse off with warm water and pat dry

Splurge or Save? When to buy designer versus drugstore beauty…

5 Jun

urban-decay-category-a-a

We all have our favorite beauty products, while others we seem to constantly be changing and searching for that right one.  Learn what to splurge a little extra money on and what you should save on without sacrificing your look, and most importantly, your wallet.

First things first…Foundation- definitely a Splurge item.  I’ve had so much trouble finding that right shade and texture, and when you find it, you don’t want to let it go! I’d much rather splurge on foundation knowing that it is the exact shade and formula that works for my complexion!

Next, Mascara- Save. Don’t get me wrong, designer mascaras can be nice, but either way all mascaras need to be changed within a three month time span and usually dry out before then anyway.

What’s next? Eye liner- most definitely a Splurge.  I line my eyes dark and use quite a bit of liner doing so, and I have tried almost every single eyeliner I have come across trying to get one that was long lasting, highly pigmented, and that didn’t irritate my eyes.  I splurge on my Urban Decay eye liner, but it glides on so smooth and lasts forever, unlike the cheap brands that fade away or smudge/run, if you can even get them to apply nicely in the first place.  Your eyes deserve a break from any extra irritation!

As for lipstick- I personally Save on most and once in a while Splurge on one cute gloss or lipstick…but really, if you have a good lip primer, you can get away with a drugstore brand lipstick and no one will tell the difference.

Eye shadow- I believe in a good eye makeup primer, splurge on the primer if you find a good one!  Eye shadow seriously lasts a good while, so I splurge on a good palette that’s nicely pigmented and is versatile when it comes to matching my look…If you can find a great shadow for cheap, then definitely save if you can!

Nail polish- in this day and age, Save! With all the nail strips and stickers and cheap brands of polish out there, you can get a ton of polishes for the price of one designer brand and still have a great manicure!  Now if the nail polish is a one-of-a-kind or a handmade nail polish that you can’t live without, that’s another story…but you can always afford a couple of those if you save on the rest of your polish collection!

And last but not least, Blush/Bronzer- If you don’t want to look like a clown from over applying a cheap blush…blend!… or better yet splurge a little more on a better brand, they are usually nicely pigmented and have more natural looking shades that last longer and apply beautifully.

Hope this helps!

If you don’t already know, I am a huge fan of Urban Decay cosmetics and this includes their New Makeup Setting Sprays- a must have for the Summer!  The sprays come in regular and travel sizes, great for throwing in your makeup bag or purse.  There are three different types: De-Slick, which helps control oil and do away with surface shine…All-nighter, which makes skin look ultra smooth and has a super high-tech formula that literally cools down the temperature of your makeup and helps it last up to 16 hours! (good for all complexions)…and Chill, which has a time- release cooling technology that is good for drier to combination skin and helps make up stay in place for 12 hours!  Totally amazing products that actually work! Thanks Urban Decay!

Studded Nails

29 May

Here’s a trend that I absolutely love and adds an extra oomph to any set of nails…Studs!

You can find them in beauty stores, nail salons, drug stores, on line, and many other places.  They are inexpensive and are easily applied with nail art glue.

These studded nails caught my eye:

Make your own lotion from coconut oil!

18 May

th (6)

If you’ve read my post on coconut oil then you already know all of the benefits it brings…but making your own lotion from it is one of my favorites!  It lasts longer than store bought lotions and is really good for your skin!  You don’t need much to make the lotion, you probably have some of these things in your kitchen already.

You will need:

  • 1/2 cup  olive oil (or almond oil)
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup beeswax
  •  1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil

You can also add essential oils if you would like!

All you have to do is:

  • mix the ingredients into a glass jar (any kind will do as long as it’s big enough to contain the ingredients)
  • heat a couple inches of water in a sauce pan (enough to submerge the bottom bit of the jar)
  • place the jar in the hot water and watch the ingredients melt, shaking around occasionally
  • pour into small jar or container of your choice and put on lid and you’re done!

Make your own natural bug spray!

8 May

Unfortunately I am like a magnet for mosquitos, gnats, ticks, and any other nasty little bug out there…but I refuse to douse myself in DEET or other chemicals they put in non-natural bug sprays.  Sure, there are bug sprays that are now made for people like me…but why buy them when you can make your own?  If you don’t already have essential oils in your home, I recommend grabbing some…they sure do come in handy!  You can find them in natural or health food stores, drug stores, and even some grocery stores, or online from places like  doTerra.  I grabbed this specific mixture from a website called Garden Therapy (they even added the cute label to print out and stick on your bottle):

Ingredients

  • 4 drops citronella essential oil
  • 4 drops lemongrass essential oil
  • 4 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 4 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 4 drops mint essential oil
  • 1/4 cup pure witch hazel

Mix these oils into a glass or plastic atomizer, shake and you’re all set!  Keeps the bugs away and smells good too! (And no unwanted chemicals of course)

Organizing your nail polish!

30 Apr

I am a nail polish junkie.  In case you didn’t already know.

That said, I have a larger collection of nail polish than most nail salons…and am always looking for new ways to contain and organize my stash.  Nail polish racks can be expensive sometimes, so I’ve found a bunch of different inexpensive ways to store polish, whether you have a few bottles or a complete store full…
