Summer Saviors: things around the house that will save you (and your pocket)

There are a few key items that I like to keep around my house, and that I suggest you do as well.  These include: coconut oil, olive oil, baking soda, and honey (raw). There are so many uses for these items, and it helps to have them handy when treating certain ailments…rather than having to run to the store to buy special or expensive products for each situation.  Here’s some examples that could come in handy this Summer:

  • coconut oil has hundreds of uses… and can come in handy to soothe sunburn and also to as a moisturizer for dry skin. For more uses check out my post under PRODUCTS TO LOVE: Coconut Oil
  • baking soda, when mixed into a paste with a mashed up banana (and scrapings of the peel), and about a fourth of a cup of whole grain oats, makes an awesome remedy for super itchy bug bites! Leave it on for 8-10 minutes and rinse off. Major relief and no worries of any harmful chemicals on the skin!
  • raw honey prevents infections around wounds, and can be used as a sunburn treatment when mixed with a mashed up cucumber and a few teaspoons of aloe…just use enough honey to keep the mixture from running off the skin.
  • olive oil also has many uses, and is great for its moisturizing properties.  It works amazingly as a hot oil treatment for frizzy hair! Just heat the oil to slightly warm in a heat safe container and dip your hair in it, then wrap up in a shower cap and warm towel and let sit for 20-30 minutes. Then rinse with warm water and shampoo (probably twice to make sure you get all out).  And viola! Super soft and silky tresses!

Just some uses that are inexpensive and can help get you through the Summer!  I’d love to hear about how you use them…

Penny Pincher: DIY (Edible) Sugar Lip Scrub

10 Mar

So the cold weather has NOT been very nice to me and I have had chapped, peeling lips for the past couple days (super annoying!)…I looked in stores for a decent lip scrub and came up empty handed. I looked online and found a few but wasn’t too sure about the ingredients.  Then I remembered a recipe for a sugar lip scrub that I had made in high school…not only does it work wonders but it’s made from natural ingredients that most people already have in their kitchen! Best of all, the cost is almost nothing compared to buying the pre made stuff..AND..IT”S EDIBLE!!! So, here’s what I used:

  • 1/2 tbsp. olive oil
  • 1/2 tbsp. honey
  • 1/2 tbsp. brown sugar (you can use regular sugar if you like)
  • dash of cinnamon

Mix the ingredients together in a small container and then apply to lips with index finger.  Rub for a couple minutes and then wipe off with a wet washcloth and you’re done! I admit I licked a little of the mixture off my lips first…yummy!  I applied chap-stick afterwards.  The scrub will leave your lips nice and smooth!  I saved the rest to use for a repeat application (which is about twice a week until lips are back to normal.)

Definitely glad I remembered this concoction before I spent money somewhere else.  Hope you like it!
